Silverton is extremely rich in history dating back to 1846. It was in this year that David Botha, a Cape farmer, settled a farm where Silverton is now located. By 1874 the gold rush in Pilgrim's Rest presented another opportunity which was recognized by Hans Mundt, a German immigrant. He bought the farm for 1400 pound and built a halfway station for travelers. After the discovery of silver on the farm, a part of it was bought by Silver Mining Company for 9000 pounds. This allowed the Mundt family to build a Victorian house to replace the original thatched roof home; the latter was then utilized as a packing shed. In 1961 the estate was donated to the municipality of Silverton which handed it over to the National Cultural History Museum in 1975. It was then named the Pioneer Museum and is still a landmark in the area.
